-Setting the Stage:

1. If you've built the Lemonade Stand, you already have most of what you need for this project. If you have not built the Lemonade Stand, you'll need to build the three bottom panels and cut the flagstaffs to size. Do not make the shelves, though – they'll only get in the puppeteers' way!

-Constructing the Curtain-Top Frame:

2. Stack the two lx6 boards with their ends even. Cut two pieces 59 inches long; these will Become the long sides of the curtain-top frame. Cut another pair 34 inches long; these pieces will become the short sides of the frame. Finally, cut two 23-inch lengths; these will become the filler pieces.

3. Place the 34-inch side pieces to your left and right on your work surface. Set the 59inch front and back pieces perpendicular to the 34-inch side pieces, with their ends resting on top of the ends of the 34-inch pieces, to form a rectangle. Set the 23-inch filler pieces on top of the 34-inch end pieces, between the ends of the 59-inch front and back pieces. You should now have a rectangle in one plane on the top. Square up the pieces using a framing square along the outer edges.

4. Carefully lift up the filler pieces and put carpenter's glue along their bottom surfaces.

Replace them and recheck the alignment with a framing square.

Drive four 114-inch screws through each filler piece into the end piece below to fasten the two pieces together.

5. Lift up one of the long sides and put glue on the top surfaces of the two ends benefit it.

Replace the piece. Holding the long side in place, drive three 1/4-inch screws through each end, into the side piece below Avoid driving a screw in the extreme outside corner of each corner; you'll be drilling holes for the curtain rods there later.

6. Repeat step 5 with the other long side.

7. Check the alignment one last time and try to get the frame as close to square as you can.

(Perfection is not required.)

Drilling

8. When the glue is dry, turn the frame over. At each corner, square a line 3-% inches in from each outside edge, so that you have two lines that intersect. Use an awl to punch each intersection point.

9. Put the 1 1/4-inch Forester bit in the drill chuck set the spur of the bit in one of the small holes you punched with the awl.

Drill a hole all the way through the long side and the end piece benefit it. Repeat at the other three corners.

10. Turn the curtain top frame upside down on your work surfaces, with the filler pieces facing down and the short sides to your left and right. Square lines across the nearer long side 28 inches in (from either end.) On one of these lines, mark a point 1 inch in from the near edge of the frame.

On the other line, mark a point 2 inches in from the near edge of the frame.

11. Reach across to the long side away from you and square a line 1 inch in from each edge at one of the far comers. Mark the point where the two lines intersect. Do the same on the other far corner. If there is a screw in the way at these cross-hairs, rake it out now.

12 . Put the 51i6-inch bi t in the drill chuck. Drill a hole all the way through the frame at each of the four points you've marked.

These smaller holes are [or the curtain-rod ends. Making the Awning Ruffle

13. Cut your ruffle cloth into three 12-inch-widc s tulips. (Each one will measure 11 f 'ct by 12 inches.) Fold each piece in half lengthwise and run a hot iron along the folds. You should now have three 11-feet by 6-inch lengths of cloth.

14 . Turn the curtain-top frame so that the filler pieces face up and one of the long s ides hangs about 2 inches off the front of your wad, surface. Clamp the frame in place. Then find the center of the front edge of the frame and make a small pencil mark there.

15. Find the midpoint of one of the pieces of ruffle cloth. At the midpoint, staple the unfolded edge of the cloth to the center of the front edge of the frame, keeping the edge of the cloth flush with the top edge of the frame. Take a look: The unfolded edge of cloth should be stapled to the wood and the folded edge should hang down.

16. Grab hold of the top edge of the cloth a few inches to the left of the midpoint. Bring that top edge back against the midpoint staple, making a loop of cloth that points out toward you.

Keeping the top edge in position, flatten the loop to the left and staple its end to the edge of the frame. The new staple should be Just about an inch away from the midpoint staple. You've just made one pleat.

17. To make the next one, grab the cloth a few inches to the left of the pleat, pull the top edge back to the staple you just placed, fold the loop of cloth down to the left, and staple it flush to the top edge of the frame working to the left, create a series of flat, folded pleats across the top of your theater, like those at the tops of old-fashioned curtains.

Try to make your folds even, stapling every inch or so. (Pleating may be easier task with two people working together, one to fold and hold the cloth and the other to staple.)

18. When you reach the end of the cloth, staple the end to the frame, get another length of fabric, and keep going. Overlap the new fabric over the “ruffle” of the old fabric by an inch or so.

When you get to the corner of your frame, turn and reclamp the frame on the work surface and turn the corner with your fabric.

19. Continue pleating until you reach the end of the shot side. There, cut the fabric about 1/2 inch longer than you need and fold this extra underneath before you put the last staple in just before the corner.

20. Go back to the middle of the front and repeat the pleating and stapling process, working to the right, until you have completed the ruffle all the way across the front and the other short side.

21. Glue a long piece of ribbon along the top of the ruffle to hide the staples, starting at the end of one short side, moving across the front, and finishing on the other short side. Cut off the excess ribbon when you are finished.

Gluing, smoothing, and holding the ribbon in place may require a few extra sets of hands. The result will be a beautiful finished ruffle.

Crafting Curtains

22. Cut the curtain fabric in half. Each piece should be 5 1/2 feet long (but longer is okay).

23. Lay one of the pieces of fabric flat on your work surface.

On one of the long sides, fold over 1 inch of the edge, iron it down, and staple it in place.

Repeat this process on both short sides. Then bring the other piece of fabric to your work surface and iron and staple the same three folds.

24. Now you're ready to fold, iron, and staple the remaining long sides. Figure out how much you'll have to fold over to make the final width of each cloth 36 inches. If your fold is more than 2 inches, use two or even three rows of staples to hold it down.

Or you can trim off some of the extra cloth to make your fold less than 2 inches.

25. Clip the curtain loops to one of the long sides of each piece, starting at a corner and

placing a clip every 6 inches or so.

Shaping the Curtain Rods

26. Uncoil the two lengths of copper tubing, bending them until they are basically straight.

To bend (or straighten) the tubing, grasp it with both hands, with your thumbs pointing toward each other and about an inch apart. Gently push in with your thumbs until you feel the tubing move. Shift your hands along the tubing and press down again with your thumbs, bending the tubing just a little in each place along its length to avoid creating kinks.

27. When the copper tubing is straightened, lay the two lengths side by side and mark them together at 5:; 4, 3n ~, 361/2, 60 Y2, 65 1, 4, and 66: 4 inches from one end .

28. Grab a length of tubing in both hands, with the end you measured from in your right hand. About 11/2 inches from the end, beginning bending the tubing Bend a little, move your hands farther down, and bend a little more. When you reach the first layout mark on the tubing, stop bending and check your progress.

Your goal is to make the tubing turn 90 degrees evenly between the end of the tube and the first layout mark. Adjust your curve by bending more (or unbinding if necessary), spreading your efforts along the whole length of bent tubing. (Perfection is not required, and you will be able to make adjustments later.)

29. Grip the tube at the second mark (31 3/4 inches from the end), with the bent end on your right and pointing up. Begin making a second bend along a horizontal plane, trying to complete a 90-degree turn by the time you reach the third layout mark. You should end up with a left-hand bend.

30. · Hold the tubing with the unworked end on your left, the second bend pointing down, and the first bend pointing toward you. Position your thumbs at the fourth layout mark and begin bending along a horizontal plane, trying to complete a 90-degree turn as you reach the fifth layout mark. Use a tubing cutter or a hacksaw to cut the piece at the la t mark.

31. The second curtain rod will be a mirror image of the first.

Repeat step 26 to make the first bend. To make the second bend, hold the tubing with its curved end to the left of your hands and pointing up, and move your hands to the right as you bend.

For the final bend, hold the rod so that the second bend is to the left of your hands and points down, and move your hands to the right as you bend.

Cut the piece at the final layout mark.

32. Place the curtain frame upside down with the 5/16 -inch holes in the corners closest to you. Hold the completed curtain rods up to the curtain frame to check their alignment, remembering that they overlap at the center of the frame. Insert the ends a short way into the 5/16, -inch ho le until the rods support themselves. The rods should curve around the outside of the larger holes (so that on opening night the curtain can follow the same path around the pole that wilt run through the holes) If your rods are out of alignment, bend them into position now.

33. Remove the curtain rods one at a time and slip the curtains onto them. Insert the ends of the rod back into the 3/16 -inch holes. Work the ends of the rods down into the holes until they reach all the way through the frame to the work surface.

34. Set the frame on edge with its top surface facing you. Drive the: till sheet-metal screws into the tub until the screw head contacts the wood frame. This is an unorthodox use of screws and copper tubing, but with some extra force, the threads should bite into the copper and flare it night against the sides of the drilled hole.

The African film industry has grown exponentially and has built a name for itself worldwide. We all know Nollywood. Even if we have not watched the movies, they are played on our TV channels, in our cinemas and advertised on our billboards. It has opened a window into modern Nigeria, Ghana and various other African countries.

But, what has happened to the 'Animation' industry? The mix of African art, culture and the wealth of actors and characters should give Africa the edge in this market too. Yet from all research we are still up and coming. With exception of a few companies from countries like South Africa and Kenya currently building a reputation on an international scale, a lot of effort and work has been put in from many small and passionate companies all over the African continent with only the Internet as their display . Many are struggling to be acknowledged in their own society. My admiration is for the creators of 'Pokou Princess Ashanti' a 3D animation by Ivorian animators. They have worked hard to build awareness of their work in their society and it was released in various cinemas in Côte d'ivore. Other independent artists are making political satire, music and there is a lot of talk about various TV series that have aired abroad and some yet to be featured, triggering some excitement to the genre. Animators work hard with limited funds and resources churning all their artistic flare while crowds are waiting to be wowed by the next big thing.

Promotion and distribution are aimed to build a bridge between the people and the industry. Potential for demand is there in Africa, but it is a relatively new terrain for the industry. Throughout history different devices had been in use to create the illusion of motion or animation. Zoetrope a wheel like device with picture on it was invented in China in 180 AD Phenakistoscope, Flip books and then cameras began to show moving pictures. With invention of computer, computers begin to be used for animation.

Hummingbird (1967) a ten minute film was considered as the first computer generated animation film. From then on computers begin to be used for creating 2d and 3d animation. Toy Story (1995) was first feature length 3d animation movie. Then rest is the history with block buster movies such as Avatar, Shrek, Up etc grossing heavily at box offices. 3D Computer Generated Imagery or CGI is now being heavily used in not only Hollywood but through the world.

I began my journey of learning animation and modeling. For your convenience I have enumerated my journey.

1. I got a trial version of the 3D animation software and began tinkering. In the beginning I did not even know a bit about this software. I and my brother keep fiddling with buttons in the interface. Through this trial and error we would discover new things each day.

2. Then when we got some basic knowledge of the software and we began making things given in the help menu. Slowly and gradually our skills were getting polished.

3. Almost 1 to 2 years passed in this tinkering. My brother realized he could not go further so he kept up but I did try, learning one thing after another. I downloaded learning material and tutorials from the internet.

4. After when I got enough experience I started to spread the word about animation (at that time no one knew about 3d animation). I showed them my work and they were impressed.

5. People begin to contact me for making modeling and animation. At the same time I began teaching animation. This journey took me almost 9 years.

The journey had not been easy. I face several problems. When my siblings and friends enjoyed watching TV, movies and hanging out, I would sit next to the computer watching video tutorials. Art and all its form require passion and dedication. Without passion you can learn to draw lines and circles but you can not breathe life into your artwork. Creativity can not be achieved pain. This journey has been a labor of love for me.

In this tutorial we will create and render a 3D water surface in 3ds max that can be used as any water body. We will use Mental Ray renderer and Daylight System in the scene.

Step 1

By default 3d max uses Scanline renderer. Change the renderer to the Mental Ray. Go to Rendering-> Render Setup-> Common Tab -> Assign Renderer -> Production.

Step 2

We will have create a geometry. Create a Plane. Go to Create Panel -> Geometry -> Standard Primitive -> Plane.

Set Length to 500 and width to 500.

Step 3

Create a Target Camera just above the Plane. Go to Create panel -> Cameras -> Target.Activate the Perspective view and press C in the keyboard to activate the Camera view.

Step 4

Open the material editor and crate an ocean material.

Click on get material and select Arch and Design

Select Ocean plane and assign material to it.

Select Water, Reflective Surface template.

Step 5

Now we will illuminate the ocean with the daylight system. Daylight system is a simulation of real world sun. Go to Create Panel -> Systems -> Daylight in the top viewport.

Daylight Parameters

  • Sunlight: we will use mr Sun
  • Skylight: mr Physical Sky
  • Position: We will set it manually.

Step 6 First Render of the 3D Ocean

We have the ocean and the daylight system so it's a good idea to check how the rendered image looks like. Your image should look similar to picture below. In the background you see the mr Physical Sky environment map which was added automatically in the previous step. The brown line represents the ground in the background map. Thanks to Metal Ray's lume shader the plane looks like and 3d ocean already. However, there are some things I'd like to change:

  • Horizon should be lowered to hide the ground
  • Smaller Waves
  • More blue and saturated colors to both ocean and the sky
  • Little brighter image

Color, saturation, and brightness of the image can be adjusted in the parameters of the Daylight:

  • mr Sky Parameters
    • Multiplier: 1,1 (increases the intensity of the sun)
    • mr Sky Advanced Parameters
      • Red / Blue Tint: -0.1 (changes the hue of the light and sky)
      • Saturation: 1,3 (changes the saturation of the light and sky)

And if you feel like it, do some color correction in Photoshop:

  • Brightness: 35
  • Contrast: 25

Technique

Traditionally, in the absence of computer technology, animations were done manually. The most widely used method was making a series of drawings, which were later blended into a film. Another method was popularly adopted by using physical objects or models. Using this method objects or models were placed at a certain place, and images were captured. The objects or models were then moved, and again a set of images were captured, and this process kept on recording.

Superman Unbound begin with Lois Lane being taken host by some heavily armed terrorist. Supergirl and Superman both arrive to save Louis. Lois who now knows Superman's identity as Clark Kent wanted to make their relationship public. A roundish shape metallic object shows up in the sky and is heading towards Metropolis. Superman intercepts it and activates its transmitter, after defeating the robot within it. He takes the disabled robot back to his Fortress of Solitude. Supergirl tells him that the robot is one of Brainiac's drone soldiers.

Brainiac used his robot army and his skull ship to invade Kandor (Capital of Krypton). The robots killed some of the citizens of Kandor and also downloaded their knowledge. She tells Superman that her parents and the rest of the remaining Kandorians were taken prisoner by Brainiac. Supergirl was sent to earth, while Kandor was miniaturized by the large skull ship. After an argument with Lois, Superman learns of Brainiacs origins. The being, Brainiac is a former Coluan scientist who augmented himself with cybernetic and genetic enhances.

Brainiac travels the universe, miniaturizing worlds he invades, and raises the knowledge of the living people he captures. The planets are not destroyed, he just keeps them in his skull ship. Superman is captured by Brainiac when he tracks him down to a planet that is being invaded much in the same way as Kandor. Superman fights off the robotic mechanisms within Brainiac's ship. He enters a room and is shocked to see a bunch of bottled planes prior to their invasion by Brainiac. Brainiac tells Superman that he has been scanning information about all the planets and of the people. He uploads the information before destroying them.

Brainiac also reveals to Superman that he knew Krypton would ever be explode and that's why he spared his home world. Earth's location is revealed to Brainiac by Superman's birth rocket guidance system. Brainiac tells Superman his next target is earth before teleporting him away to Kandor. Superman's powers are significantly reduced while on Kandor because of its red sun. He sees some time with his uncle and aunt, Zor-El and Alura. Superman creates an aversion to attract the attention of the drone robots. He defeats the two that appear and uses their teleportation ability to return to the skull ship.

Brainiac is seemingly defeated by the rejuvenated Man of Steel. Superman now has in his hands the shrunken city of Kandor and flies back to earth using the birth rocket. Lois is informed by Supergirl of all what has transmitted and alerts the Pentagon of a possible invasion by Brainiac. Elsewhere, Brainiac reawakens, repairs his ship, and heads to earth. He defeats the heroic efforts of earth's forces and encases the planet within his ship. Superman and Supergirl are captured by Brainiac. The legendary Kal-El historically breaks free from the clutches of Brainiac and an epic battle between them ensues.

Superman Unbound: The Review
Superman Unbound at 75 minutes long is a well put together animated movie. It is well written and will keep you interested. The voice acting and story is top notch. The pace is fast and filled with a lot of action. Superman / Clark Kent is decently voiced by Matt Bomer. I do prefer Tim Daly though. He just sounds more convincing as the heroic Man of Steel. Stana Katic does a great job as Lois Lane. She is very much like the, “stop right there buster”, that Margot Kidder brought to the Lois Lane character.

Since Supergirl / Kara Zor-El is a teenager she naturally is whiny and a bit of a brat. Molly Quinn does a good job at making her annoying. I am not familiar with this version of Supergirl since I rarely read recent comics to keep up with the new characters. The only version of Supergirl in the comics I remember was not even Kryptonian. She was a shape shifting protoplasmic life-form called “Matrix”. Brainiac had the best voice in Superman Unbound. John Noble from The Lord of the Rings and the science fiction themed TV Show, Fringe comes off as cold and menacing as Brainiac. He does a perfect job as the very evil, Brainiac.

I usually enjoy the DC Comics Universe animated movies and Superman Unbound does not disappoint. Out of all the ones I have seen, Superman / Doomsday is the only one that let me down. That one did not turn out good and seemed rushed. The animation and character designs in Superman Unbound have a lot of detail and they are very vibrant. The animation quality can be considered hit or miss, because at times the characters look too skinny. The design for Superman may come across as being somewhat odd looking to some. He appears to disproportate through some scenes in Superman Unbound.

At times his arms are way too skinny for a guy who has a huge muscular chest. The way his face is drawn makes him look like actor Nicolas Cage. I find that kind of funny considering Nicolas Cage was scheduled to be Superman in the precelled 1998 Superman Lives movie. The movie's script was somewhat based on the Death and Return of Superman storyline. Ironically, Brainiac was the main villain in it. He unleashes Doomsday on earth to kill Superman after he blocked out the sun to weakened him. Jimmy Olsen is drawn to look no older than 13 in Superman Unbound which is also odd. This animation style seen in Superman Unbound somewhat reminds me of Aeon Flux.

Brainiac puts up a good fight in Superman Unbound. Just like in the comics he is a formidable villain. The fight scenes are brutal and not too short. There is also some blood in Superman Unbound since a weakened Man of Steel is seen bleeding in two scenes. Some might be disappointed by the fact that Lois Lane does not have a big role in the animated feature. There's hardly any romance between her and Clark Kent. Superman Unbound has a well written plot and the whole movie is entertaining. Superman Unbound is based on the 2008 storyline Superman: Brainiac, which would eventually lead to the New Krypton story arc. I did not read those storylines so I am not familiar with them.

Having grown up in Japan, its amazing to me still that I did not immerse myself in the manga culture until I left the country. Bleach is what is considered a mainstream “shonen anime” along with Naruto which you probably already have heard of. From what I have heard – giving Bleach a try is the best decision I have made. If you want the short answer to what my review is, this show is a good one.

The plot of Bleach is pretty easy to grasp in the beginning. There are Soul Reapers who have the ability to guide souls to the Soul Society which is an afterlife dimension. Reapers not only guide human souls but combat evil spirits to protect everyone. On initial watch, you meet Ichigo the arrogant sarcastic teenage boy (typical character). The first season introduces us to the most important of characters, Rukia and allows us to understand the basic concept of Bleach as we know it. We do not realize until the end the new events that will cause us to go on rescue missions to defend the Soul Society.

Finally after the first 50+ episodes a climax takes place and makes the entire season worth watching. But, 50 episodes in – who has the attention span to watch this? Continuing on you are promised great rewards at the end of this brick road. Two arcs are a slow paced action anime which is the issue I've had with it. The Soul Society arc grabs your attention and requests you to be a loyal fan, until its interest plummets. While the Arrancar arc is interesting in new aspects, either that or the Hueco Mundo arc do much for the senses. Like most cartoons these days, the plot does not thicken past the save the damsel in distress mode, and gets old. Many of the repeat fights do not have much oomph to them as we must see the same scenes over again.

Aside from the filler, the reusing of plots and damsel in distress Bleach did show an increasing in potential as we dive deeper into the series. The universe comes alive in new ways, and Bleach improves as it matures. The other seasons are not as good as season 1, and leaves your yearning for more. Oddly enough Bleach is still enjoyable to watch even having finished it already. The true excitation is that with every rerun you find something new about the show. You inspect powers of each character, what motivates the villain of each episode and the quirks of the characters. The true spark of this show is in fact the cast, the odd twists and behaviors keeps you coming back for more. Even when the animation fades in and out between low frames and odd character interaction, its still beautiful to watch.

What also sparks the imagination to Bleach's claim to fame is their Soundtrack. Each one brings new sound, and revives the old. The tone of each episode is followed closely and does not miss a beat in action and underlying electric tone.

I've said this over and over to friends who do not watch anime, watch this one first- give it a few episodes and you'll watch it to the end.
